acupuncture for anxiety in Portland, OR

Most experienced recipients of acupuncture can attest to its calming, anxiety-relieving effects.

Once needles are placed we settle in, gaze around the room or close our eyes, and feel our nervous systems passively reach a comfortable parasympathetic zone.

These benefits aren’t just anecdotal! Research has found acupuncture is a safe, effective, reliable treatment for the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder.

In fact, acupuncture performs better than many commonly prescribed medications, and with no side effects. Its efficacy is comparable to traditional talk therapy.

How does it work?

Acupuncture reduces stress hormone levels, balances hormone levels more generally, and has a regulating effect on the parts of the brain responsible for controlling emotions.

How many treatments are necessary?

Even a single isolated treatment can provide a short period of relief. I welcome my patients to drop in for a single visit if they’re experiencing peak stress or anxiety in their lives and need a bit of support.

To more fully address a chronic pattern of anxiety, a series of 8-12 treatments is necessary, once or twice per week, followed by a pace of ongoing maintenance care.
