Can acupuncture treat systemic inflammation? | Portland Acupuncture

Exciting new research!

We’ve seen how acupuncture can reduce inflammation in chronic asthma, pain conditions, Parkinson’s disease, and more. Now, a team of neuroscientists have used acupuncture to calm acute systemic inflammation in mice.

Cytokine storm is associated with an array of diseases and many of you will recognize this term from your own recent research – it can occur as a complication of COVID-19. Cytokines are signalling proteins which control cellular activity in immune and inflammatory responses(1) and cytokine storm refers to a runaway inflammatory immune response which can be fatal or cause long term organ damage.

When mice received acupuncture, they experienced a greater chance of surviving cytokine storm, and fared better than those who did not.
